Kamara II and Simon do it again with two shortbill spearfish in one day. Nobody else in Kenya has caught more spearfish than Simon who seems to be making a habit of finding them at this time of the year. The first striped marlin has also been tagged and a couple blue marlin lost so its looking good.

Another fishing season has passed by and as we reflect we cannot help but be reminded by how unpredictable fish are. And a good thing too, in my opinion for if we knew what to expect it wouldn’t be nearly so much fun. It’s a shame that the big yellowfin tuna migration yet again failed to appear in 2009 but the sailfishing in December was outstanding, and the marlin fishing in January-February was pretty good too. In fact any season where a skipper breaches the 50 marlin mark has to be a good season. Despite a period in February where it appeared that the NE-monsoon would end prematurely the marlin fishing season actually continued well in to March. The sad part is that the number of days spent out on the water was well down on previous years perhaps a direct consequence of the global recession.

On 8th April, Mr. Rottner and his family from Austria had gone out for a day’s fishing on Broadbill. Mr. Rottner’s father, Rudi used to fish with us regularly during the 1980’s and sadly passed away in 1994. His son, having heard so many stories from his father decided that he must come and fish [...]

The Kenya fishing annual dinner was held on Saturday 3rd April 2010 at Ocean Sports Hotel to raise funds to run the association. Whilst in Watamu Simon went fishing on White Mischief, a privately owned boat. A wonderful day with a big blue marlin and a striped marlin caught plus a huge black marlin was caught by another boat.

Kamara II fished by myself and Raymond Matiba entered the Friends of Kenya Fishing Tournament run out of Hemingways Resort in Watamu. This is pretty much an Extended Combo, a marathon 33 hours of non-stop fishing. The fishing in the Pemba Channel has remained hot throughout and the monsoon is only changing now as I write this report 2/3s of the way through March. As you will see there have been some big fish hit in the channel by our boats this month. Once again the Pemba Channel has demonstrated that it can produce some monsters of the deep.

Once again apologies for not posting these fishing reports more promptly. As you will see I was away from Shimoni during this period and have been really busy since my return.

During this period Pat was away in Kilifi participating in the Kilifi Classic Fishing Tournament. This is one of the oldest tournaments in Kenya and has always been very popular. For those of you who may not know where Kilifi is, it is situated on a very deep, narrow creek north of Mombasa and just to the south of Watamu. I was also fishing up north, not in the tournament but further north at Malindi and Lamu.
