South of Mombasa , across Likoni Creek, lies a vast uninterrupted stretch of white sandy beach lapped by fascinating opal lagoons.
Diani Beach is perhaps the most spectacular ribbon of flawless tropical beach, shaded with palm and Casuarina. Here one can find a range of fine hotels offering a wide variety of watersports and activities.
Behind the beach are patches of original forest, the most extensive of which is Jadini - a morning's trek from the beach hotels - where colobus monkeys, baboons, birds and butterflies run riot. A few more kilometres inland is the cool and refreshing wildlife getaway of the Shimba Hills National Park.
For those of you who are looking to combine a traditional beach holiday with a few days fishing one of the many beautiful hotels at Diani Beach might be an attractive option.
Diani Beach is one of the most beautiful beaches in East Africa with sparkling white sand, a wide variety of hotels from 5* down, watersports, restaurants, bars, night clubs and shopping. Diani Beach is 50 km from Shimoni and good taxis are widely available from your hotel. The journey will usually take between 1 and 1.5 hours and should cost approximately $65 for the return trip. For a full day's fishing the boat usually leaves the mooring at 6.30am so you will need to leave your hotel at around 5 am. The driver will spend the day in Shimoni and wait to take you back to your hotel after you return from fishing at around 4pm.
» Other options for beach hotels in Kenya
At the far southern end of the coast is unspoilt Shimoni, with its relics of the slave trade and coral gardens. The Kisite / Mpunguti Marine Park can be reached from Shimoni or nearby Wasini lsland, a lovely trip by dhow or motorboat to an intriguing underwater world.
Whilst on a North Kenya safari there are good accommodation options for those who might prefer to spend all or part of their safari living on shore. In Malindi there is the Driftwood Beach Club, the Peponi Hotel in Lamu, the exclusive Manda Bay Resort further north in Manda Bay or Munira Camp on Kiwayu Island.
