Kenya fishing safaris

Fishing safaris

Now is your chance.

Explore the full extent of East Africa's fishing potential.

Exotic Destinations

With the introduction of Kamara II to the fleet Sea Adventures is able to offer fishing adventures to virtually any destination in East Africa using either "Kamara II" or "Broadbill".

Mafia Island, Kilwa and Latham Island are all well within range of us. Malindi, and Kiwayu to the north too. Sea safaris, and big game safaris are combinations well worth considering.

Kamara II

She has a large fuel capacity and hence is able to fish about 10 days without refueling. You could fly in to any of the East African coastal airports and we shall meet you there.

North Kenya

In 2006 we carried out our first two safaris to the North Kenya area. In both cases the guests flew in to Malindi from Nairobi and stayed a first night at either the Driftwood Beach Club or the Coral Key Resort before setting off the following morning. The safaris took us to the North Kenya Banks, Lamu, Manda and Kiwayu. Due to the large distances involved safaris of less than 6 days are not really practical.

Mafia Island

  • A large island situated about 80 nautical miles to the south of Zanzibar, Mafia is a stunningly beautiful island some 48 km long and 17 km wide, part of which has been turned in to a marine protected area. The northern half of Mafia is not included within the marine park, but further south fishing is restricted in certain areas. Sport fishing is permitted in general use zones on the payment of a fishing licence fee, which in December 2004 was just $20 per person for 7 days. In addition the boat must be licensed at just $20 for 7 days plus park fees of $10 per person per day including the crew. The main anchorage is in Chole Lagoon surrounded by islands with gorgeous white sandy beaches. Accommodation in Mafia is available at the Kinasi Lodge, Mafia Island Lodge or the Pole Pole Resort.

  • Kinasi Lodge

This is a most attractive place able to accommodate up to 28 guests in cottages each with en-suite bathroom and covered verandah. We visited Kinasi and Mafia in April 2002 with "Kamara II" and were most impressed with the place. It would be a lovely place to take the family as the non-fishing members could do some diving, snorkeling or simply laze about on the beach or by the swimming pool. The lodge has recently undergone major refurbishing and prices are very reasonable.

  • Mafia Island Lodge

When we first visited Mafia in 2002 this lodge was still state owned and run and was very run down. However when we returned to Mafia in December 2004 the lodge had become privately owned and run and the difference was like chalk and cheese. Mafia Island Lodge can accommodate up to 80 persons in attractive cottages overlooking the beautiful Chole Lagoon at very reasonable rates. The lodge continues to undergo refurbishment and will continue to get better.

  • Pole Pole Resort

    - a small rather exclusive resort in very attractive settings, the most expensive of the three options. Mafia Island is well known for big dog-tooth tunas and in December 2004 Nick Smith from South Africa landed one of 65-kg on 24-kg line off the NE coast of the island. During that trip we also encountered large numbers of sailfish on the east coast raising up to 20 a day. The area has not been extensively fished and I am sure that there must be some huge giant trevally and wahoo plus all the other fishes associated with reefs. Mafia is situated just 20km off the great Rufigi River Delta, which must add considerable nutrients to the area.

Getting to Mafia Island

One can fly direct to Mafia on almost any day of the week from Dar es Salaam or Zanzibar or we can meet you in Dar es Salaam and start the safari from there. Why not fit your fishing safari in with a visit to the famous Selous Game Reserve only 1 hour away by light aircraft. Since Mafia is 2 to 3 days motoring from our base at Shimoni bookings of less than one week will not be feasible. If you are interested in visiting Mafia please let us know since if we can combine more than one charter we can keep our prices down. Enquire here ...

  • Kilwa Creek

Situated in Southern Tanzania about 80 miles south of Mafia Is. in a beautiful deep creek that extends many miles inland. The deep water comes very close in to the coast in Southern Tanzania and the fishing is superb. There are many islands and coral reefs to the north extending right up to Mafia with great fishing for huge giant trevally, wahoo, dog-tooth tuna etc. Further offshore there are billfish and big yellowfin tuna. Guests can stay at the Kilwa Ruins Lodge in the entrance to Kilwa where they can accommodate up to 16 visitors. You could combine a fishing holiday with a trip to the nearby famous Selous Game Reserve. Southern Tanzania is still that little bit of Africa that has not been changed by development and much of it is still as it was centuries ago. The fishing potential is huge since the reefs and deep water areas have not seen any form of heavy fishing.

  • Big Game. Big fish.

Additionally, Sea Adventures has put together a few suggestions on how you can combine the thrill and experience of big game fishing with a big game safari. We are able to arrange safaris to suit your needs and your budget with reputable companies. Ideally you will need a minimum of 3 days because of the distances and the need to avoid racing from one destination to another. If you are doing a live aboard safari to North Kenya then we have options for you to do a safari from Malindi either by road to Tsavo or Amboseli or by light aircraft to the Masai Mara. We can design a specific safari and fishing holiday for you on request. Safaris can be tailor made to suit almost any budget from joining one of the package safaris to having your own personal safari guide. Kenya is a large, very beautiful country with tremendous variety in terms of scenery, wildlife, climate and culture.
